The YMCA Childcare Program has been designed for full– time and part– time kindergarteners. Responding to requests from parents, teachers and principals, Kinder Plus provides extending school– day learning in fun and exciting ways. Kinder Plus includes the following components:
Language and Literacy
In kindergarten children will begin to develop the skills necessary to learn to read. At the YMCA children will have opportunities to listen to stories, to discuss the story and related experience ; this will assist in the development of comprehension skills. Children will also begin to recognize rhymes, same sound and blending of words. Children will have opportunities to strengthen their writing skills through daily drawing and writing activities.
Art and Sensory Development
Kindergarteners need ample opportunities to express themselves through art sensory experiences. Children explore several styles of art creative expression, as well as activities that promote overall sensory integration such as sculpting and experimenting with sand and water.
Music and Movement
Kinder Plus Music and Movement offer our Kinders a time to learn about their bodies and try new skill, while enjoying a variety of musical experiences. The development of creative expression is encouraged as children are exposed to different styles of music, creative dancing, and rhythmic activities. Children are exposed to music and instruments from around the world.
Exploration and Investigation
Hands on science and math activities stimulate our Kinders natural desire to explore and investigate their world. Children are encouraged to experience the world fully, describe what they see, ask questions, repeat experiences and understand why things happen.
The math program is a continuation of our Kindergarten Readiness program utilizing
The Junior Achievement curriculum that gives the children hands on experience to help children understand economics.
Kindness Curriculum
Staff and children share the responsibility of early character development. The Kindness curriculum by BCSPCA focuses on animal s and empathy development. Children are also exposed to activities that encourage acceptance, honesty, generosity and responsibility. Children love the fun and playful activities that encourage an atmosphere of love, acceptance and empowerment. Parents are encouraged to participate and support early character development through family exercises sent home.
